Read why 2012 registrants plan to
attend and why they think you should too:
"CDI Folks,
I just signed up for the 2012 CDI
Conference in San Diego...!
You might ask...Why should I do that
now, when the conference isn't until October?
Simple decision, really.
Laura has offered a first-of-its-kind,
eight-month payment plan, along with the usual Super Early Bird pricing.
By doing it this way, I pay less per
month than I spend on coffee and snacks, and the low monthly amount CDI
debits from my credit card is practically imperceptible.
Plus, I have the confidence that I'm
'Good to Go!...'
To those who haven't attended
conferences regularly, here are six quick reasons to definitely 'JUST DO
IT':
1) You are a professional,
professionals go to conferences, therefore you go... it's that
SIMPLE.
2) As a Resume Writer/Career Coach,
you advise people to 'invest in themselves' and keep informed in their
fields, so PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH.
3) It is a business expense and fully
TAX DEDUCTIBLE.
4) Within 90 days of returning, due to
great tips on improving your business model and knowledge, YOU WILL
RECOUP THE ENTIRE COST. (I always do.)
5) With the 8-month payment plan,
YOU CAN AFFORD IT.
6) And finally, it is loads of FUN
AND YOU DESERVE IT.
Just my two cents worth (2 cents
divided by 8 months equals how much...?)
By the way, just ask anybody who has
attended in recent years. Laura orchestrates a wonderful event... she
truly makes each attendee feel welcome and valued."

"Great list,
Grant!
I'll add my #7 - I really enjoy meeting F2F, IRL (imagine!) the
people I'm following and reading about, and interacting with online for
months or years.
Legendary people attend this conference - Joyce Lain Kennedy,
Martin Yate, etc., and it's so much fun to hear them speak, talk with
them, shake their hand, etc. And then there are the rest of us - it is
so much fun to see that Twitter icon or LinkedIn image come to life! It
is kinda/sorta like a family reunion without the baggage.
Plus tons of learning! What could be better?"

"As a member of CDI since its roots as PRWRA
(I went to the first PRWRA conference in Atlanta 10 years ago), I can't
say enough about the value of going to conferences. I would not be a
resume writer today without the support and help of folks who will be at
the conference this year. Much of my business success has come from
attending the CDI conference - from referrals through networking and
from the ideas I have learned in the presentations.
Even though we get to chat a bit on
these email forums, there is nothing better than to see each other face
to face - and network at the conference. CDI is unique in having
everyone together in one room with great camaraderie. I have been to the
other career conferences - I try to make each organization's every other
year - except for CDI's which I have attended each year for the last 5
years (I missed a few earlier than that when I was not in my own
business). I think this conference will be the 7th CDI conference I will
be attending. CDI offers more networking for me than other conferences -
and I think of that as one of its strengths. I am looking forward to
returning again to a great resort in San Diego.
I am on the Meeting Planning committee
this again year – and will be on one of the panels. I have already
signed up for the conference myself.
As others mentioned, I am excited
about the speakers selected for the conference - some experts who have
spoken at previous career conferences offering updated and fresh
information with the perspective of years in the business - along with
many new experts not seen before at our conferences (where I will be
learning many new things!).
Your 3D Personal & Business Plan?
Ditch. Dare. Do! – Deb Dib is always one of my favorite speakers.
She is known for her ability to brand and bring out the best in her

Next Generation Mentoring: Lead

"I want to echo’s Robin’s points here… and
add a couple about why going to the conference is a great return on
investment.
Let’s put this into simple economic
terms: We tell our clients that purchasing a résumé is an INVESTMENT in
themselves, right??? Now it’s time to put the shoe on the other foot:
attending the CDI conference is an investment into ourselves
individually, as well as our businesses!
The conference speakers are always
amazing experts… in the two years I’ve been a member, each time I have
gotten back to the office following the conference, I was able to
IMMEDIATELY put to use some of the great ideas into my business!! (How
often can you say that about any conference you’ve ever attended??)
But the intangibles such as networking
are even more valuable… thanks to the CDI conference, I’ve made
incredible connections with industry colleagues who have also become
close friends… don’t ever underestimate the value of having someone to
swap ideas or battle stories with!!!
So if you are one of the members
thinking to yourself: “Gee, I don’t know if I can afford to go to the
conference…” then you need to change your thinking to, “Gee, can I
afford NOT to go?”
And there’s your answer.
See you there!!!

"I agree, wholeheartedly, with everything
Grant has said. In fact, I registered yesterday myself—using the 8-month
payment plan—and my conference roommates will also be registering soon.
We each know it’s a not-to-miss summit. I attended my first CDI
conference last year—in Savannah—and I’m still telling everyone, who
will listen, that they should definitely register for the summit."

"Today, I have been watching the emails drop into my inbox about the
conference in San Diego. So, I thought I would chime in with my 2-cents
on the subject.
As one of the founding members of the organization, I have watched
growth over the years. Growth of the organization and growth of the
members. I began to think about what makes that so unique and how that
happens.
First, it goes without saying than we owe the organizational growth
and continuity to Laura and the great volunteers who assist her in
managing and running this juggernaut.
Second , I like the the personal growth we all experience when we attend
the conference. I have never been to a CDI conference where I didn't
learn something. Oh, I've been to plenty of other conferences held by
other organizations and one can get to know people and exchange ideas
and that is a great thing but I LEARN stuff at this gathering. The
"newness" of offerings in subject matter. In my opinion, most of the
other conferences are boring and don't offer the type of subjects or
content that appeal to me. I am sure they appeal to a great many people.
They just don't meet my needs. CDI meeting content meets my needs AND I
leave the sessions satisfied that I have not wasted my precious time or
hard earned money. If I have offended some of you who are
multi-organization members, so be it. But, that's the way I feel.
I enjoy going to the conferences for all the same reasons as have been
expressed in today's emails. For me, it IS like old home week when I see
my peers. Over the years I have enjoyed seeing them engage with each
other and be supportive of each other and HELP each other in meaningful
ways.
So go to the conference! It will do you and your clients good. Every
time I attend I learn new things. Hopefully, some attendees learn from
me, as well. That thought makes me feel good.
This is what happens at each and every CDI meeting - interesting topics,
techniques and tactics that one can use back home on a daily basis and
mingling with people you know you can turn to and count on.
See All Of You There."

"I can give you 250 reasons why attending the upcoming CDI conference is
a good idea. I picked up a new idea at a CDI conference and started
using it as soon as I got back home. It didn’t take hardly any effort at
all and, as I begin preparing my taxes. I noticed it generated $5,280 in
additional revenue. That’s a 250 percent return on my investment in
attending.
I should mention my “investment” includes all the costs of attending,
every dime I spend. I try to make it a mini-vacation. I upgrade my
hotel, eat at the very best restaurants, rent a car if I need to, and
fly business class if that makes sense. I also fold in the revenue I
might lose by closing the office for a few days. Even with all that, I
still got a great return."
"Knowing me, you know I love the Return-on-Investment conversation! One
of the things I love about the CDI Summit is that every single session
is designed so we take away new, actionable information, and most often
very specific action steps. I found this was true of last year’s Summit,
even when my first reaction was that a particular session wasn’t
relevant to me or my business. A single suggestion or a new way of
looking at an old challenge can pay for the Summit in days or weeks."

"I can’t help but
echo Don’s sentiment.
When I started my business six years ago, I fell into the trap of
believing my income was limited due to my geographic location. While
attending my very first conference, Laura convinced me to try raising my
prices and low and behold she was right. When I look back on those early
days, I remember all of my local competition who tried and failed to
make a living as a resume writer. When I first moved to Lincoln there
were four resume writers and now I’m the only one left. The only
difference between my competition and myself was my desire to model my
success from others in this business.
Today my fees are almost five times what they were back then with
more demand for my services than ever before. Go to conference, find a
mentor, and make the kind of living that you deserve.
I look forward to seeing everyone in San Diego!"

"I have to chime
in that I am very excited to be going to this year's conference! The
six-month payment plan is still very feasible, especially with the super
early bird rate that is continuing through this month. It will be
wonderful to have three days to meet and learn from so many smart folks!
I had watched the testimonials on CDI’s website after I had
already made my decision about attending. If you are on the fence about
the conference, those videos will seal the deal for you.
Looking forward to seeing many of you in October!"

"Think you know
what to expect from CDI’s simply fabulous Global Career Empowerment
Summit?
Sure, you’ve already heard about the power-packed programs that
can build your business, enrich the services you offer to clients, and
(most importantly) boost your revenue.
But did you hear about the camaraderie, collaboration, and
memories you’ll take away?
If only the walls of the Savannah Riverfront Marriott could talk.
Energetic discussions in between programs, friendly hallway exchanges,
after-hours dialogue, and late-night chats… there’s NOTHING to stop you
from coming away feeling as if you’ve just checked in with lifelong
friends.
My first Summit in 2011 was all this and more, with plenty of
bonding after getting the chance to put faces to names. From the time I
arrived at the airport to my last taxi ride out, I had the distinct
feeling that the Summit could have easily continued for another full
week.
Just as fascinating as the friendships were the business-related
discussions with others who really “get it” – and who understand the
challenge of building a successful operation in an industry that’s
moving at the speed of light.
On the fence about attending this year’s Summit in San Diego?
Don’t be. Just act!"

“Best conference I've been to in a
loooong time... I've been in this business thirty five years and it is
not often I feel that I am in a gathering of genuine peers. At CDI I had
that most pleasurable feeling of genuinely being part of the group,
where I had as much to learn as to give. It was great to meet and
catch-up with dozens of people I have held in respectful awe for many
many years. I haven't felt so charged, humbled and motivated in a long
time."

"The 2011 Global Career Empowerment Summit
was excellent! It was a great conference - the people and the sessions
were wonderful! Savannah is beautiful. The hotel was excellent, and the
conference was fabulous!
So great to meet all the people I
hadn't met before (in person) plus the 'old' (not in years) friends from
previous conferences! Too many to name. One of the nicest things about
meeting face-to-face (F2F) is that, most of the time, we are meeting -
in person - people with whom we have been socializing online for a
while, sometimes quite a while. So, it's not like meeting a stranger;
it's more like a reunion of people you haven't seen for a while.
REALLY *BIG* THANK YOU to Laura and
the conference committee for the excellent sessions and everything else
at the 2011 Summit! Wonderful to meet everyone and to learn about the
products and services provided by the exhibitors.
And, the sessions were definitely
'kick-ass' - excellent information about online reputation (much more
than the usual "technology fly-by"), the future of job boards from THE
sources (current and future), how to do "peer regression" and other
secret "sourcing" techniques from - probably - the creator of the
process, how to package and price products and services for greater
income, and so much more.
Don't know how 2012 could possibly
exceed the 2011 Summit, but I'm sure that Laura and the conference
committee will manage to do it.
Hope to meet more of you there, at the
Catamaran Resort on Mission Bay in San Diego, CA, next October!"

"Best. Conference. Ever.
I just wanted to drop a quick note
sending props to Laura and everyone else including the amazing
presenters we had that made the CDI Career Summit so awesome!
Just got home and am actually blocking
out time this morning to parse through my copious notes to decide how to
prioritize the many great ideas I got while in Savannah.
Which is another reason why I wanted
to write: We all know how it is – we get back in the office and are
excited about the conference, but then reality sets in. For everyone who
was able to attend- make sure you carve out some time to consciously
plan how to use the ideas to make sure they get IMPLEMENTED… and then
measure the difference. I can say that my business grew 100% after I got
back from San Diego last year… so I can hardly wait to see what happens
in the coming year after I implement the 2011 conference ideas!
Way to go, Laura - fabulous
educational summit and it was great to put even more names and faces
together."

"Thanks for all of your hard work that went
into the conference. This was clearly the best collection of national
career industry speakers and innovative career strategists ever.
We heard DIRECTLY from Monster,
Indeed, and from Martin Yate, the author of the Knock 'Em Dead series
(#1 bestselling resume series ever & #3 bestselling career series ever),
as well as a member of the Federal Reserve, an SEO guru, Barbara Adams
(in my opinion, the nation's #1 Military & Federal Resume Expert), and
many more.
With everything I learned I will
recoup my investment & expenses in the conference within 6-8 weeks.
Laura is on a roll, and as the
resources she provides to her members get greater and greater, her
leadership skills become more and more evident.
Those who could not attend should
start planning to attend in 2012, and I don't need to recommend those
who did attend... they already know the value."

"This was my second year attending. I can
say first hand how critical it is to attend these conferences as a
"newbie". I learned amazing things last year, and made some wonderful
friendships with people who have been a huge help to me in getting my
business up and running. This year, I felt like I was visiting the
sisters and brothers I've never had (I'm an only child). CDI is not only
a wealth of resources and information, it's a family. I'll always be
grateful for everything I've gained by participating in these

As Susan mentioned, it is a gratifying
experience to meet the friends we've known only virtually for so long. I
wish I could have taken you all here to Denver so we could keep on
having fun! I have so many fantastic memories of all of you.

Great to meet the attendees in person.
I am grateful for all of the learning, on which I am now following up.

"I have to chime in and say... This was a
fantastic conference. Like Laura Smith-Proulx, I too found it very
difficult to get back to work today. I keep thinking of all the
wonderful people I reunited with because that is exactly how it felt.
Like a reunion!
In the elevator, at lunch, in the
conference room -- I heard someone call my name with such familiarity
and likewise I found someone I recognized around every corner. It was a
delight to finally see everyone face-to-face.
In addition to the presenters, every
colleague I sat next to (Marty Weitzman, Michael Kranes, Jeremy
Worthington, Dawn Rasmussen to name a few) shared their best practices
so generously. No judgment. It was always, 'this is what works for me.'
It was a fun-filled learning, welcoming, and professional environment.
We had social media/ web 2.0 job
search leaders like Tim Tyrell-Smith, Miriam Salpeter, Hannah Morgan,
and more; TORI legends Like Barbara Safani and Sharon Williams; new
writers, and old timers in the mix of cohorts...and a few pirates!
Really, what is there not to love?!
The venue was wonderful. The food
ridiculously good! And I got to hug The Master, Susan Joyce!
Janice Worthington is such a
knowledgeable, inspiring business woman and presenter! All presenters
were great but, can I say, we need an entire hour of Janice! Wow! I came
away with so many valuable nuggets. Camille Roberts and Laura Labovich
are as friendly and giving in person as they are virtually. I could go
on and on and say something memorable about everyone that I met. I won't
--but you all know who you are (synergy).
Laura DeCarlo is a tireless leader.
She barely took a break! (If she even did at all.) I want you all to
know that her priority was always us and we felt it. Thank you, Laura
and the conference little elves."

"This was my first conference with
CDI—second year in business. I enjoyed myself thoroughly, learned a lot
and had many things validated. Laura, Robin and the board assembled a
fabulous group of speakers—all of whom gave me tons to think about and
apply to my business. The key thing is to understand recruitment to help
clients to have an effective job search—that is what I walked away with
from the conference. Additional kudos to Laura, Kate and Chris for the
volumes of behind the scenes work – and props to all the volunteers that
helped make it a seamless event. The best thing for me was meeting so
many of you in person whom I read in this forum and in online venues and
seeing my friend Michelle Riklan again, who I met for the first time
last year and was one of the people who turned me on to CDI. The warmth
from all of you was carried from this online forum to the conference
rooms. It was really wonderful….
Thanks, again, Laura, for all the work
you put into this conference and throughout the year to help
everyone—this newbie is very grateful."

Whenever
I feel stuck, I know attending a CDI conference is the right fuel I need
to get me going again. As much as this is a day of online interaction
and social media, there is NOTHING that replaces the face-to-face energy
of a room full of talented and motivated professionals who will recharge
you. (I'm using lots of automotive analogies, because I am at "Howdy
Honda" wanting for my car to get repaired!) One of the reasons I first
joined CDI is because it was one of the first experience I had where
professionals in the same industry, supposedly competing for the same
clients, NEVER keep their cards hidden, and share ALL their secrets. The
generosity is amazing. While I've been doing this 7 years, I enjoy
getting into a beginners mind and challenging all my assumptions, and
learning from the best in the biz. I still feel on the Savannah 2011 CDI
high."

As a first-timer, I can't tell you how
much I appreciated everyone's overwhelmingly warm and welcoming

And, even though everyone I talked to

answer the concerns, and hopefully return next year with good news!
Also, I have NEVER been to a

value!

"As many of you may know, I attend several
conferences/conventions/ summits every year - both in person and
virtually. And, I have participated in most of the CDI conferences,
starting with PRWRA.
Not only was this year's event as
terrific as in the past; this was the first conference in years where I
attended every session. That is a testament to the relevance of the
topics and quality of the speakers.
As always, I left with pages of notes
and takeaways gained from presenters, panels, audience suggestions, and
even lunch with the speakers (what a great idea and thanks Pat). Even
after my 32 years in this business, I learned new tactics and have
already implemented some changes and improvements.
Of course, I loved connecting with
long-time friends and new members I had only 'met' through emails.
Others have already commented on the value of the informal benefits we
get from those networking breaks and roundtable seating.
I also really enjoyed the social
activities: the pirate party (aarggh) and dinner at Paula Dean's (yum).
The trolley tour so impressed me that I plan on vacationing in the
Savannah/Hilton Head area in 2013.
The Marriott staff was accommodating
and friendly and the venue was lovely with spacious rooms (I love
spreading out) and comfy beds (I slept like a log).
Laura and the many volunteers and
committee members should be proud of the excellent summit they
presented. I know I am very grateful for money and time well spent."

Thank you Laura, Chris, and all for
your tireless efforts in orchestrating a most successful conference, for
securing speakers who spoke to the core of our businesses, for the
planning that went into the program; for bringing together the
resources, vendors, talent, and teamwork. A special thank you to the CDI
volunteers who gave so freely of their time and to the members for all
the spirited conversations in the hallways, on breaks, or over lunches.
And finally, for the courageous conversations, sharing your personal
stories, ideas that make a difference, and for new friendships forged. I
am grateful.
As my plane touched down in New York
City, I felt like one of the Yankees returning home after a championship
World Series. Thank you, thank you!"

"It was fantastic
seeing my 'professional family.' It was SO nice to connect with everyone
at the conference. It was wonderful to finally meet some of you from
other organizations who have joined CDI! I enjoyed meeting and
connecting with every single one of you. So many to mention, but really,
every single one of you. Is that not the very best part of any
conference?
I think we have such a great group, and as someone else mentioned,
it is starting to feel more like a reunion. I'm thinking it should be
called a RETREAT. My version of retreat is: it is a treat to meet
annually and learn and share our experiences, knowledge, and love for
our industry with each other. It is great to get together with
like-minded, forward-thinking, cutting-edge career professionals and
capture some synergy and energy to fuel us for another year, as well as
incorporate our new knowledge into our businesses to benefit ourselves
and our clients.
Here is the Merriam-Webster definition of retreat: (I particularly
like the keywords I highlighted)
1 a (1) : an act or process of withdrawing especially from what is
difficult, dangerous, or disagreeable (2) : the process of receding from
a position or state attained <the retreat of a glacier> b (1) : the
usually forced withdrawal of troops from an enemy or from an advanced
position (2) : a signal for retreating c (1) : a signal given by bugle
at the beginning of a military flag-lowering ceremony (2) : a military
flag-lowering ceremony
2: a place of privacy or safety : refuge
3: a period of group withdrawal for prayer, meditation, study, or
instruction under a director.
Speaking of director. Laura DeCarlo, thank you for the opportunity
you give us to meet, withdraw (from our routine), and receive
instruction in a 'safe' environment (I had to steal that from Pat
Schuler) that allows us to grow professionally and fosters enhanced
communication and connection. I'm so honored to rub shoulders with all
of you 'best of the best.' Thank you also for giving us the opportunity
to compete in the various award programs. BIG CONGRATULATIONS to all the
award winners!
Can't wait to help plan for San Diego! See you there!"

"Thank you for yet another wonderful CDI conference. I am in awe of your
talent to pull off an amazing conference rich with speakers, full of
camaraderie and a wonderful experience for all. This conference also
provided an opportunity for some of the members of the CPG team to see first
hand and absorb the great talent and forward thinking experts in our
industry. Oh yes, our crew had a lot of fun in Savannah enjoying the
conference, some fine restaurants, pubs, and boutiques. We even caravanned
to Tybee Island and enjoyed a wonderful seafood buffet. and then wandered
down to the beach so our landlocked guests could stick their feet in the
sand. We created memories together that even further bonded our friendships.
I know I speak from everyone who attended from CPG and wish to personally
thank you."

Why Industry
Professionals Will Attend in 2011
Listen to long-time attendees and
industry leaders tell you why you can't miss this Summit!
Read why 2011 registrants plan to
attend and why they think you should too:
“No one asked me
to do this, I just believe very strongly in conference attendance, and
the more of you who attend, the better the experience.
For those of you who are "on the fence" or not sure if you can or should
go, PLEASE consider these points:
1) By breaking the payment up into small amounts you CAN afford it.
2) The amount per month is only a FRACTION of what you charge for just
one resume.
3) You constantly advise your clients to improve their skills and
"invest in themselves" through a better resume, better education &
training, etc. Shouldn't YOU do the same?
4) The mere fact that you are now committing to go will make you more
CONFIDENT in your value to your clients and result in more sales,
5) You work hard & you OWE IT TO YOURSELF to go,
and finally,
6) Don't worry about the hotel & airfare, you have MONTHS to get that
together, so....
JUST DO IT!"

“No one asked me to write this note to my fellow CDI members. I
volunteered because everyone should know about my CDI conference
experience.
One of the things I look at every year when planning out my budget is
the return on investment (ROI) I expect to get out of the conferences
and professional development that I plan to attend. Am I going to meet
enough potential clients at the event or meeting that will make up for
my registration fees ten-fold? Or will I learn something that will
enhance my ability to do my job on behalf of my clients?
Last year was my first CDI Career Empowerment Summit. I was, for a
normally outgoing person, feeling rather intimidated about going to a
conference that had so many esteemed and well-established writers. Was I
going to learn something new? I was confident that I would.
But what I walked away with last year in San Diego during our annual
conference was so much more than that. MY ROI from CDI was not only
knowledge and insights that absolutely added more skills and knowledge
on how to do my job, but the connections and RESOURCES that I made
through the connections truly did add weight to the ROI from my
conference registration. Everyone welcomed me with open arms and it was
like ‘old home week’ in a very comfortable, easy-going way… never mind
that many people attending have books out or are regarded as key
industry influencers.
My advice: You
can’t sit there and debate the cost of attending, because if you look at
it this way, it will always seem painful. But what does matter
is the investment you are making into yourself. It’s your
business. Your future. The tools that each attendee gains from attending
a CDI conference are not measurable… what you earn from attending
continues to build your business beyond your wildest dreams and cements
friendships and connections with industry leaders in ways you can’t
achieve if you stay home.
If you are literally on the fence about attending CDI, my advice to you
is: Book it. You won’t regret it, and you’ll have not only a great
opportunity to make lasting connections and learn the newest trends, but
also the chance to build your career industry support group.

“Dawn's
email made me realize I may have a little different perspective on the
CDI Summit, that of exhibitor. In the decades of my career,
I've survived many conferences as attendee and as vendor. If you've
been an exhibitor you know that not all conferences are "created
equal". It's always a roll of the dice whether your investment in the
conference will end in the plus column or the minus column.
There's also the question of whether the attendees are serious or just
looking for free trinkets and t-shirts. SO I have to tell you how
surprised and pleased I was by the attendees at CDI Summit. They were
warm, intelligent, serious in their search for ways to improve both
their services and their business. I found that almost uniformly, those
who invested in the Summit came expecting to invest further in their
businesses and seeking resources that enabled them to do so.
Many attendees stopped by my booth as a result of the excellent design
of the space. I loved the depth and breadth of the questions they wanted
to explore and their openness to different viewpoints. I felt welcomed
instead of disdained, as is sometimes the case for vendors.
In short, if you have a product or service that addresses this market,
or the market these great professionals serve, you should find this an
excellent investment for your business development resources. Last time,
I saw a factor of 5-fold ROI on my investment and I made great
connections and alliances that are still very warm and important to me
and will continue to be for many years.”

“As
a member of CDI since its roots as PRWRA (I went to the first PRWRA
conference in Atlanta 9 years ago), I can’t say enough about the value
of going to conferences. I would not be a resume writer today without
the support and help of folks who will be at the conference this year.
Much of my business success has come from attending the CDI conference –
from referrals through networking and from the ideas I have learned in
the presentations.
Even though we get to chat a bit on these email forums, there is nothing
better than to see each other face to face – and network at the
conference. CDI is unique in having everyone together in one room with
great camaraderie. I have been to the other career conferences – I try
to make each organization’s every other year – except for CDI’s which I
have attended each year for the last 4 years (I missed a few earlier
than that when I was not in my own business). I think this conference
will be the 6th or 7th CDI conference I will be attending. CDI offers
more networking for me than other conferences – and I think of that as
one of its strengths. This year is special, since it is in one of my
favorite cities, Savannah – and I most likely will be going early to
visit a good friend of mine prior to the conference.
I am on the Meeting Planning committee this year – and have had some
input in helping to find speakers for the conference (since I have a
network in Georgia). I am excited about the speakers selected for the
conference – some experts who have spoken at previous career conferences
offering updated and fresh information with the perspective of years in
the business – along with many new experts not seen before at our
conferences (where even I will be learning many new things!).
Shally Steckerl is the leading expert in using Social Media in
recruiting – he previously was on the LinkedIn advisory board, he is
SourceCon (biggest recruiters conference in the US) and is the
recognized leading expert in sourcing by using Social Media. His session
at CDI’s conference will be on how job seekers can use the same social
media tools and techniques he uses to find candidates to easily find
employers and opportunities – very unique strategies! Dr. David E. Altig
is the Federal Reserve’s expert in how the economy affects the
employment outlook (extremely important considering the daily headlines
in the news for the past few months). I have heard both speak – and they
both give information filled presentations – which I think will give us
a new perspective on our businesses and the employment field.
I am looking forward to hearing some speakers for the first time. Martin
Yate will be giving the welcome address at the conference (I read and
used his “Knock ‘em Dead” books to get jobs before even before becoming
a resume writer). We also will have a panel from some of the top job
seeker websites in the country, including Indeed, CareerCast, Monster,
Startwire and RileyGuide.
I have been
honored, as the Director for Awards, to be selected to be on a panel
myself on “World-Class Resume Writing Secrets: Insider Tips from
Award-Winning Resume Writers & Competition Judges.” I will be joining
past winners and judges, including Sharon Williams, Barbara Safini, Jeri
Hird Dutcher, Laura Labovich and Susan Guarneri. We are currently
selecting topics to discuss which will give you the insider tips on how
you can submit entries that give you a better chance at winning the TORI™
(Toast of the Resume Industry) Award – and be recognized as one of the
top resume writers in the industry. You will only get these tips if you
attend the conference.
Other favorites of mine are also speaking at the conference:
Barbara Adams, who started me in this business (Thanks Barbara – I will
ALWAYS be grateful for your guidance and support for many years) will be
presenting on Federal and Military Transition resumes. I view her
knowledge as the top in the business (she has recently co-authored a
couple of books that are fabulous) – and I will be finishing up my
Master Federal Career Coach (MFCC) credential from her this year.
Susan Guarneri – my roomie at the conference – will also be presenting
fabulous information. With Laura DeCarlo, she will be presenting on The
Bullet Train to Job Search Success: Best in Class Online Identity Model
– which is becoming more critical day by day with all the recent stories
on how social media can hurt a job seeker from getting a job. Laura and
Susan also will be on a second panel, Magic Bullet to Six-Figure
Success: Strategies in Packaging & Pricing, with other leaders in the
industry I have enormous respect for (and have all advanced my career
and business enormously through consultation, presentations and
referrals): Don Orlando, Janice Worthington and Pat Schuler.
There is more – a lot more being presented at the conference – but these
are a few of the highlights as I see them.
I hope to increase MY networking opportunities by seeing everyone from
CDI at the conference.
Hoping to see you in Savannah.”

"After reading comments from Dawn Rasmussen and
Pat Schuler, I thought I’d chime in to share in the excitement of this
year’s Career Directors Summit conference in Savannah, Georgia. This
will be my 4th year attending and I am just as excited for this year’s
events as I was for my first conference in 2008.
Now that I’m (almost) seasoned in CDI conferences, I continue to
anticipate the conferences and the opportunity to grow relationships,
develop affiliations, and listen to the top experts in our field. Every
year I take away several nuggets that I can immediately put to use in my
business, that more than pay for the cost of the conference. To me it is
an investment (and a fun mini-vacation) that I can’t afford to miss.
For those who have never attended the CDI conference, it is a
great way to meet and listen to experts present their knowledge on all
areas of the careers industry and building our businesses. Any
nervousness you may feel about meeting many of the industry’s true
leaders, will quickly fade when you meet these genuine professionals
from all over the U.S., Canada and beyond. They are fun, warm, and enjoy
sharing their extensive knowledge and experience.
I have roomed with different attendees almost every year and have
had a great time with all of my roomies. Even if I’ve only talked with
them on the phone, it is easy to share a room with someone who has so
much in common with you. Plus, you are hardly in the room because there
is so much to do at the conference and in the evenings. Finally, it is
fun and it is a chance for me to get a glimpse of a new city and check
out the sights. I can’t wait for dinner at Paula Deen’s restaurant!!!
Hope to see you there!"

"We have all had this
type of call from a prospect. Someone who begrudgingly, finally, is
looking for a resume writer to help them with their resume, often after
looking for work a year or longer. They didn’t have the foresight or
gumption to invest in themselves before it became a crisis, and now they
"really can’t afford" to pay, so are shopping around for the best
"discount" they can negotiate, happy to get any free advice along the
way
– hey they
think, "I still may be able to tweak the resume myself."
You talk to them and see the pattern. Continuing education? Nope.
Industry Organizations? None. Certifications? Nada. Never investing
in themselves, they are left with a stalled career, little advancement,
no network, and no ROI for the modern employer.
Are you THAT PERSON? Are you still waiting until you have that "good
business year," "save enough money," or "have the time" before you
invest in yourself and your business by going to a CDI conference? We
advise our clients on proactive career management, and that advice
serves us well also. I earn my conference investment back in multiples
every year I attend
–
and I have been going since my first year in business in 2008
– when I had to pay
full price because I signed up after the early-bird pricing expired.
Join me at this year’s conference and let’s learn innovations that
will grow our business, acquire concepts that will contribute to our
economic future, and develop lasting friendships with peers that
understand the joys and challenges of being a career-industry
professional. Don’t wait another year. Don’t be THAT PERSON."

"I couldn’t agree
more with August!
The CDI Summit
will teach you what you need to know to not only acquire more
clients but more importantly will give you the confidence to charge
more for your work.
I remember telling
Laura years ago that because I live in a small city (Lincoln, NE) I
couldn’t charge what others did. Laura proved me wrong and as a
result my $200 resume packages have since increased to $600 plus.
You will find that the CDI Summit will quickly pay for itself."
- Angie
S. Jones, CPRW, CEIC, Haute Resume & Career Services LLC
* * * * *
"This
is a great topic that August brings up! Much of the not-so-secrets of my
success are from conferences attended since year one. Even in that first
year when I had to go to Kinko’s and buy six sheets of colored paper
each week to do ‘flyers’ because that was all I could afford (none of
this great print on demand stuff like now and no nest egg/savings to
pull from anyway), I did just about whatever it took to afford at least
one conference each year. I picked the one I thought was best for my
needs and then I found a way.
There wasn’t much to save back then as I was charging so little in the
90s for my services. But I desperately wanted to know what my colleagues
were doing to be successful. I knew if I could learn from them I would
figure out what seemed like the big secret. I truly believed Brian Tracy
when he said, “Why reinvent the wheel when you can learn from the
mistakes and successes of others?”
Quite honestly, I became indebted to dear old dad, worked a second job
at a local college, and did whatever writing jobs/typing jobs that came
my way – I can even remember bidding on a manuscript typing job that I
saw in the classifieds! Plus, there were a lot of garage sales – really!
Everything I could I saved and borrowed to get me there.
I won’t say it was easy, but it was worth it. Many have heard me tell
the story that I would not be in this industry any longer if not for
those who ‘knew what was possible’ had not been able to advise me in
year one. I try to pass that on as Angie says in the Dollars and Sense
post she wrote earlier today. Our perception is limited on what is
possible when we are isolated!
There is something about the power of being face to face with people who
are saying, “I’m doing this and it works” to reframe your possibilities.
Now the beauty of my sacrifice, saving, and begging is the ROI.
It was at my first
conference that I won a resume award and started building my reputation
(giving me leverage with job seekers through ‘proof’).
At the second I found
out about a publishing opportunity and had more ‘proof’ when I was in
writing.
In my third year of
business I learned the secret to packaging my services which allowed me
to come home and end the struggle. That $1000 (it was one day but I
had airline and hotel) allowed me to add $37,000 in annual sales to my
business that year (and more in the years that followed). It landed me
the mentor who changed my life. It helped me created a six-figure
business in my twenties.
So, of course I would believe in the power of the conference 100% and
that’s why I make such a big deal of trying to get you there with me!
It’s why we work on our annual conference year-round to bring you the
best programming and networking possible! :-) I know the success it
created for me (and continues to create)!
Please don’t get me wrong – CDI is built around a focus of sharing,
learning, growing, empowering, and succeeding. We’ve created so many
opportunities to help you be as successful as you can be in our
profession. We continue to add more that are accessible to everyone as
with our new Tactical Biz-Tech Buzz series. But, there is nothing quite
as revitalizing as meeting people face to face for making connections
that will create real and vital results in your life and business.
I hope to see you in Savannah!"
- Laura DeCarlo, CDI President

"Wow, Laura . thanks so much for sharing!
I honestly only knew a little bit of what was contained here about
you previous to reading this. I'm sure that is a BIG part of the reason
you are able to relate to our struggles and challenges so well.
The three things that resonated with me the most were:
(1) No nest egg/savings to pull from (or inheritance either, I
say.)
(2) Our perception is limited on what is possible when we are
isolated! (Almost left the business before Laura set me on the right
path.)
(3) But, there is nothing quite as revitalizing as meeting people
face to face for making connections that will create real and vital
results in your life and business.
(I have a few examples of the above statement in action. Like I
said on the summit call the ROI hasn't been immediate for me, like for
some, but all good things in life are worth waiting for, right?)
Thanks again for sharing! In my eyes, it is important for us "real
people" to always keep in mind "where we came from"

"This conference, one of many I have attended, was the best ever,
thanks to Laura DeCarlo and her volunteers and staff.
Laura managed to bring in the career industry's top presenters and
exhibitors, coordinated a very comfortable and attractive conference
environment, and made each & every one of us feel like a VIP.
Her only shortcoming was a meteorological inability to part the clouds
and let in a little more of that famous San Diego sunshine!
Do conferences, flights, and hotels cost money? Yes, they do... and I am
in New Orleans, a relatively small market with a challenged economy.
But how can I look my clients in the eye and ask them to invest in their
careers, if I don't invest in mine? As far as missing time away from
work, I was out of the office only 2 weekdays, Thursday & Friday.
Also, Laura makes the conferences extremely affordable and totally easy
to budget with her Early Bird pricing and multi-month payment plans...
and I'm only writing this because I believe in the value I've received;
I'm not part of CDI's leadership group.
The power of telling a client, "I regularly attend annual career
conferences and get my continuing education and certification updates
each year," makes it a thousand times easier to ask them to part with
their hard earned money.
This year, I got several new ideas that will more than pay for my
investment in the conference, including one that should increase my
income by $2,400 per month!
Hope to see you all at the 2011 CDI Conference!"

Career Directors' International Summit was a real winner! The
combination of a compelling program with engaging presenters and an
enthusiastic group of attendees was electric! I will soon enter my 38th

conferences through the years. CDI's formula for success is diversity in
its program and in its membership. The time in San Diego spent with
colleagues was invigorating for our industry. Three of us figured we had

generation. Attending CDI is like a homecoming for me. No one can afford

Every detail was suberbly

delightful. But, what made the conference great for me was the
interaction with so many new (and old) friends!
We have the most terrific organization--filled with
high-energy, talented folks who are making big changes in the

and conversation on everything careers has my head still
spinning with new ideas for my clients and business.
The best part for me though was meeting the high caliber
professionals that attended and renewing friendships with those
met in the past. I always feel so honored to be among such great
company. So thanks to everyone that went and made the conference
so special!"

"I wanted to let you know that you did a great job and
everyone was buzzing about what a great time they had. The
networking at your conferences is always fantastic. I used to
think it was because historically you have a small group but
this year the group was much bigger yet the networking was
better than ever. For me I think the best part was that the
conference attracted people who are fairly new to the industry
but already influential and I appreciated the opportunity to
chat with them over more than 140 characters.
I also noticed that this was the first conference where I
seriously contemplated purchasing a second suitcase because I
had so much cool free stuff to cart home. "

“The CDI Conference in 2010 blew my socks off. The
content was the kind of high-level information that I felt I
could really sink my teeth into… we all come to conferences
craving take-aways, and I literally walked out, got on a plane
and went back into the office and immediately put 10 things into
immediate use. As someone who has been to a bazillion
conferences, it is rare to have such valuable content that I
could put to immediate use.
Also, as a former meeting planner,
this conference was awesome and wonderfully executed.
Count me in for 2011… this is a great investment."

"After trying to get to a CDI conference for multiple years
and having scheduling conflicts, I finally did it! And WHOO HOO! I
am so, so glad I made it to San Diego. There were so many of you I
felt to be friends already; now I could put faces to personalities!
It was a delightful experience in every way, from
accommodations to high-energy networking, to thought-provoking,
inspiring presentations.
Though my takeaways were deep and numerous, I would summarize
the overall takeaway as confirmation that I am in the best industry
ever! I came away with enlightenment on how to help my clients in
their careers, boost my own business, and continue to engage with
colleagues who offer a myriad of perspectives to make careers—no
lives—better.
I am honored to have connected with those I’ve known only
through cyberspace!
Thank you Laura and those who made this event possible. You
made it look seamless! I KNOW it was hard work! I will be back, to
be sure! CDI is not just a professional association. It’s family!"

"Well, another CDI conference has come and
gone, and it has been my pleasure to participate in many ways. It has
been an honor and privilege to do so.
As usual, this conference was informative and
so delightful. The information imparted was stellar. The room was full
of energy. The food was fabulous. It was truly worth every penny to meet
all the new attendees and reconnect with past attendees.
I had the privilege of spending time with one
of the World’s Best Resume Writers, Cliff Flamer, and congratulate him
for his achievements. It was great to meet industry legends, Deb Dib,
and Janice Worthington, and spend some time with them as well. And what
a delight to meet Joyce Lain Kennedy. I’ve been reading her wise advice
since I was 10.
I have to give a shout out to my ‘geek’
friends: @jobsearchcoach (Jeremy Worthington), @KatrinaKibben (Monster.com/social
media ninja), @DawnRasumussen, @KeppieCareers (Miriam Salpeter), @careersherpa
(Hannah Morgan), @ResumeWoman (Michelle Riklan). It was a blast sitting
at the self-proclaimed geek table. It was just so great so see everyone!
To my conference committee colleagues, it is a
privilege to work with you. Great job! Congratulations to all the TORI
nominees and winners!! I’m truly honored to be a TORI award winner as
well. I’m in talented company with the nominees and winners. Thank you,
again!
Laura, there really are no words to describe
the value you are to our industry. YOU define excellence! You, Chris,
and Kate go above and beyond all expectations. Karsen has already asked
where the next conference is going to be. He just loves them, too.
There is so much more to say. I am still in San
Diego taking a couple of days of vacation. I truly hope that anyone who
hasn’t attended a CDI conference to mark your calendars and plan to
attend next year. It Is one of the best investments you can make to
propel your business forward.
Also, don’t forget to read the conference
tweets at hashtag #cdi10 on
www.Twitter.com.
Thank you all again for one of the best
conferences ever! Can’t wait until next year!"

"As
one of the 50 first-timers to the CDI conference, I was honored to
meet or hear from some of the key players in the careers industry
including Dick Knowdell, Joyce Lain Kennedy, Jason Alba, Deb Dib,
Louise Kursmark, Don Orlando, and of course Laura DeCarlo! Instead
of doing the “touristy” thing, I spent every possible minute
attending the sessions or networking with amazing people. I hope to
return every year invigorated with new ideas and excited to return
to my home office and implement what I have learned. Thanks to all
who made this event possible!"

"I had an amazing week at the Career Directors International
conference! It wasn’t the knowledge and information that blew me away,
but the opportunity to meet face to face with great people. Many of the
people I met I have known for years through blogging and Twitter. I now
can put a person with those Twitter handles and blog posts. I also met
others whom I hadn’t been following and now will.
I was also impressed by
the generosity and support I felt ooze from these wonderful people. I am
honored to be part of CDI and look forward to being active within the
organization."

I, too, had a wonderful
and worthwhile time in San Diego.
Laura and her sister
selected a terrific venue
–
my room was so spacious and comfortable, I hated to leave it each day.
But, I am so glad I did. I have so many takeaways, in addition to the
networking I did that should result in lucrative partnerships. Here are
some of the highlights:
Thanks
to conversations with Louise Kursmark and Barb Safani, I have
already revised the pricing structure (up, of course) on my website.
Thanks
to Laura Labovich, I have a totally new take on networking for me
and my clients.
Thanks
to Diane Crompton and Ellen Sauter, I am ready to start using social
media to enhance my business (BTW, great handouts!).
Thanks
to Norine Dagliano, I have a renewed resume content strategy.
Thanks
to Dinneen Diette, I am implementing a job search services system.
Big thanks to Audrey
Prenzel for opening my eyes and mind to major changes I need to make
in my business bio.
Thanks
to Susan Guarneri and other participants, I now have a niche
(finally after 10+ years of thinking about it but not doing) with
NESH clients (Nonprofit, Education, Social services, and
Healthcare).
Thanks
to Debra Feldman, I am planning to re-contact former clients to gain
referrals, provide additional services, and solicit their opinions
in a survey (another session takeaway from the Good as Gold
presenter, Scott Pier).
Huge
thanks to Laura and the summit committee for an exceptional
experience.
I am already looking
forward to 2011 –
wherever it is.

"Yes, the conference was wonderful and valuable, and if you have
never attended one by CDI, you have a full year to prepare for it.
Where else could you have benefited from the one-on-one expertise of:
Stalwarts like Don
Orlando (my former mentor many moons ago when I was a member of
another resume writing organization), Grant Cooper, Janice
Worthington, Dr. Jay, Deb Dib, Deloris "Dee" Duff, Susan Guarneri,
Louise Kursmark and Deb James;
Pioneers like Susan
Joyce, Jason Alba, Val Matta & Interview Coach, Carole Martin;
Meet and chat with:
The legendary Joyce
Lain Kennedy; Twitter favourites like Miriam Salpeter (@Keppie_Careers)
and Hannah Morgan (@careersherpa). What fun we had on the bus to and
from the Olde Town.
Other Twitter
favourites like Laura Labovich, Kim Baston, Chandlee Bryan and Barb
Safani;
Newbies like Cliff
Flamer, Sophia Marshall, Brenda Cunningham, and radio personality
Kevin Scollin, among others;
Celebrate with TORI
nominees and winners, particularly August Cohen, who must've been
nominated in all categories;
Kim Mohiuddin, with
her 4-month old daughter in tow, Dawn Rasmussen with a leg cast,
Canucks (short for Canadians) like Audrey Prenzel (very entertaining
presenter) and Karen Smith-Hanney, and of course, my two roommates
Canuck Susan Kelly Easton and adopted Canuck Sherry Mirshahi.
Did anyone notice there
were more male members in attendance? At least that's what I heard.
Someone commented to me that it was the most they had ever seen since
they have been attending CDI Conferences.
Add to all of that, the
power-packed, couldn't-squeeze-anything-more-in sessions that I am still
trying to process...and to top it all, the door prizes! Mine is a
just-in-time gift of a $2,400 Coaching Package from Dinneen Diette of
Dinneen Speaks!! Can't wait to have her help me flesh out a couple of
projects I have on the go!
No conference would be
successful without the meeting committee (Camille Roberts, Tina Kashlak,
Kris Plantrich, Marcia Baker and Robin Schlinger) and Laura's two right
hands, Chris and Kate.
I am still relishing from
the camaraderie that was evident over the several days, and although I
couldn't list all your names, I am sure I connected with almost everyone
of you, and that connection made the conference a richer experience for
me. Thanks for that.
So, to those who missed
it...what are you waiting for? Start saving now for 2011."

“You did a wonderful job including everyone at the conference and
making certain that they were happy. The connections were excellent and
I never met so many helpful people in one place giving testimony to the
fact you do attract the right people. The accommodations were nice, and

well done. Thank you too for the gifts, feeding and gifting vendors -
another fine touch differentiating you from all other conferences and so
much appreciated!”

"I am so psyched up about all the
ideas I got from the conference!
I am a new member (although not new to
the industry) and made a last minute decision to attend after reviewing
the conference agenda which more than covered my topics of interest.
Like many people, I work virtually with little physical client contact
and getting out of the office to share ideas and strategies with some of
the most experienced and successful people in the field was downright
energizing. Just what I needed in the face of all the changes going on
in this market!"

they wished they were eating what I had (the Portobello stack).
Thanks again for a super conference."

incredible conference. I learned so much, met so many new colleagues,
and hopefully made a few friends as well. Never having gone to a CDI

of the crew was enhanced by Laura Labovich's terrific networking
presentation--it gave us all an opportunity to meet and a construct
within which to introduce ourselves.
I know my new to-do list will have me
busy well through winter, but I'm really glad that I have the
information, skills, and techniques to build my business and amplify my

"My first CDI conference was
remarkable, restorative, and 100% useful!
As a long-time career industry veteran,
conferences have always been a highly awaited chance for me to catch up
with old friends, meet new colleagues, and learn some new things. As a
"learning junkie" I always hope to come away with a lot of great info,
but after 20 years in the industry, I am pretty satisfied if I takeaway
3 or 4 new concepts I can adapt to my practice.
After many years of trying to fit CDI
into my schedule, I decided this year would finally be the
time...location was convenient, property looked fabulous (and really
reasonable$$!), and the program and speakers - focused much on social
media - was enticing. I expected a good conference, good takeaways, and
great colleagues (many of whom I'd never met but always wanted to).
What I got so far exceeded my
expectations that I'm still on a people- and info-high.
I'm rarely at a conference where EVERY
session is completely valuable. That was really surprising to me. Even
the few sessions I thought were not for me, were so full of unexpectedly
new and useful information that I quickly reminded myself to never
pre-judge!
One of the best parts of the two-day
"knowledge festival!" was meeting such great people. I have made a
number of new friends who will, I hope, be valued life-long kindred
spirits - if they like me as much as I like them!
I'm already eagerly awaiting next
year!
Laura and team, thank you, thank you,
thank you!"

"The BAD Things About the CDI Summit:
Now that everyone has heard the raves
about the conference, I thought I should provide the negatives so you
will have a balanced viewpoint. If you are planning to go next year, be
prepared for the following:
1. Increased workload: You will have
so many new tools and ideas for additional revenue streams to put in
place for your business, you will certainly make more money and sales
when you get home. Are you prepared to give up your free time to work
harder? Your relaxing days will be over.
2. Sleep depravation: If you like
getting a full night's sleep, don't attend a CDI conference. You will
feel compelled to stay up all hours of the night laughing, having fun,
and learning about your colleagues. And don't think you can sleep in to
catch up, because you will be afraid you will miss out on more
conversation and the hot bacon and eggs waiting for you. Did I mention
food?
3. Weight gain: No matter how much
will power you think you have, it will be hard to resist the giant
cookies, brownies, great restaurants, and pina coladas with cheese and
fruit. It is pure evil, but don't say I didn't warn you. Strawberry
daiquiri anyone?
On top of the above, you will now have
so many new friends that you will have to call, email, twitter about,
follow on Facebook, and have as resources to help you out when you need
a shoulder - I swear it will never end.
Now that you have been warned, if you
are still brave enough to go to CDI 2010, I'll save you a seat at my
table. You're on your own with the brownies:-)."

2008 - Seattle, Washington
"Thank you for the outstanding,
over-the-top conference in Seattle. I am amazed at the meticulously
planned details from the awesome speakers, fun vendor fair night,
exceptional door prizes, the whacky “Duck Tour”, right down to the
puzzles and items on the conference tables. I have never been to a
conference that served so much food—wow…it was all yummy!
It was so nice to meet all the
wonderful CDI members whose ‘names’ I have seen on the elist (nice to
put faces with names). You also have an excellent staff. They really
went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect.
I was a bit awestruck by the all the
‘industry career leaders’ I was sitting next to and in the same room
with…we truly have an awesome camaraderie and compassion for each other,
as well as a passion for the work we do for our clients.
As a first-time CDI conference
attendee, I have to say that I hope to never miss another conference. It
was well worth my time and money. There was something for everyone—from
the new person in the industry to the veterans in the industry. I did
not want to have to choose between presentations—they were all good! I
learned so much from every single one!
The knowledge gained at this
conference to give us a competitive edge in our industry is nothing
short of amazing. I know that we and all of our clients will benefit
from your vision and the information that was presented. In fact, I have
been trying to come up with a way to write about the return on
investment, but it truly is immeasurable for me.
Attending the CDI conference was
definitely worthwhile. I could name so many other reasons, but
seriously, thank you to you and your staff. I cannot wait to attend the
next one!"

"CDI has, once again, done an excellent
job with conference! It is amazing how these conferences seem to get
better and better year after year; regarding the program! Every seminar
was indeed full of new and interesting information that I can and will
use. Everyone is willing to share what they know in order to help you
better yourself, as well as your business. The one statement that seemed
to keep coming up over and over again from first-time attendees was:
Wow, I can't believe how friendly this group is and so willing to share!
...And this is why CDI is DIFFERENT
and BETTER than any other organization!!!!! Need anyone say more!!!!
Because our director cares about the members and is ALWAYS willing to go
above and beyond to make US happy; help US cut costs, form alliances,
and, of course, EMPOWER US, in order to help US succeed to reach our

making every detail so outstanding. I possess more career and personal

people, resume writers and outplacement professionals like us really
impressed me. It's funny how they totally get what we do and our
uncommon value. For you to bring that to us first hand was a total
highlight. Pike Street Market, Shawn Mullins at the Moore, my meetings
with great colleagues, Seattle, the smell of caffeine and your
recognition of everyone made this whole event world class."

I have recommended CDI to colleagues

"As for the
conference, the thing I always love about your events is that they are
edgy. Not only did I walk away with some golden nuggets of information,
but the CDI presentations are always thought provoking and they foster
healthy debate…to video resume or not to video resume…that is the
question!!! Also, because it was a very intimate setting, I got to chat
at length with people I didn’t know very well before the conference and
I’m already thinking about ways to partner with a number of people that
I met. Thanks again for everything, and once again, you produced an
outstanding conference. I can’t wait to see what you have planned for
Seattle!"

"The
laughter, great conversations and developing relationships were
wonderful treasures that I took away and will continue to reflect on.
CDI’s vision for a conference that allowed us to learn, connect and have
a whole lot of fun was most certainly actualized. I want to thank you
for your attention to all of the details that made our experience unique
and most of all for your ongoing dedication and commitment to the
industry.”

"I
thought the conference had a really great balance of fun and structure.
From my theatre background, I really appreciated some of the more
interactive elements, such as the table topic lunch, networking game,
etc. I think the the ice breakers were fabulous from the get go of the
badges with stickers. I started getting into a spirit of fun - selecting
what I wanted to put on my badge. It was great!"

"Going to the conference opened my eyes
to the resources CDI offered, which led to my membership. After going
through the mentoring program and soaking up CDI's resources, my Web
traffic is up, revenue is up, efficiency up, and my frustration level is
down. Now, if I could just improve my tennis game...I would be a happy
girl. Actually I have more time for the courts...so there is hope for me
yet."

Since last
week's San Antonio conference, I find myself up and at ''em each morning
with exciting new ideas of how to move JobRockit to the next level! I
truly believe that the people I connected with at this conference will
create a turning point in my life! It's hard to explain, but there's one
thing I have learned *for certain* in this industry: we do not get to
the Top ... alone.
It is a good thing that this is not the conference that I chose to sit
out on because of financial reasons, or any other reasons. It would have
caused me to miss once-in-a-lifetime opportunities!
Onward!

I have attended previous CDI conferences
in Atlanta, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, and Orlando that were
great, but the conference in San Antonio was the best!
The speakers were top notch, and I learned enough to more than pay for
the cost of attending. Also, the attendees were 100% caring, sharing &
fun!
I was particularly impressed with the work CDI did in preparing the Mega
Trends report. Nona Pratz deserves special praise as she devoted so much
time despite the fact that she is from the New Orleans area and will
continue to be dealing with the aftermath of Katrina for years to come.
I’m making my plans for Seattle!

Ditto! What an incredible time at such a
beautiful hotel, located in close proximity to the River Walk. More
importantly was the wealth of information from very accomplished
associates. All very practical workshops, all very informative. Good
choice of workshops. Yes, CDI has
pulled it off with aplomb, and has further equipped us and empowered us
as resume writers and career development specialists.

"Dear Colleagues and all the new
friends I was fortunate enough to have made at the conference, I wanted
to let all of you who didn't attend know how much you all missed. It was
without question one of the two or three best conferences I have ever
attended. From the wonderful no holding back camaraderie, to the
generous sharing of information on new technology, resume
products/styles, how to sell and how much for, and the exchange of
intellectual property, it was just nothing short of great!!!!!!!!!!.
There wasn't one speaker from whom
this jaded old pro didn't learn something, and I am truly grateful to
all the presenters, so if I leave out your name, forgive me (Don). I am
already adding new revenue streams to my business and doing my new
expanded Internet job searching coaching session on Tuesday for the fist
time (Thanks Barbara)...as Jack Chapman would say KA CHING (resume speak
for money). I picked up some great new resume styles and product tips
from Tracy and Louise, and sales tips from Wendy Weiss. Since these are
the areas I count as my "key" strengths I feel I received an unexpected
bonus.
Already paid to go to next years
conference in San Antonio and took advantage of the conference early
bird discount. SINCE I KNOW I AM GOING FOR SURE, WHY NOT SAVE A FEW
DOLLARS!
Laura.....my deepest appreciation and
respect for your dedication and efforts and to the team that assisted
you. I can truly empathize with the amount of work and time, and
planning that went into this (I didn't get paid for this empathy Jack)."

"This year's conference was the BEST. It
was so refreshing to hear presentations on new topics and revenue
generators. YES, I am raising my prices again! Don't you just LOVE it!!!
Best of all, I was able to meet new
people and see old friends who are never afraid to share their wealth of
knowledge. I am hosting a resume meeting this coming Friday for a group
of Michigan and Ohio writers / coaches and I can't wait to tell them
about the conference benefits. Sharon Pierce-Williams - you better be
there!

"As we 'age' in our business we sometimes
feel we know it all (or at least all we need to know) so conferences
become more about renewal, refreshment, and catching up with friends
rather than new learning.
But at this year's CDI conference I
took at least one golden nugget from every single presentation, and I'm
ready to start doing a few things differently... to better serve my
clients AND earn more for my expertise.
It was great to meet new people as
well as connect with old friends - what a great group of people! See you
all next year in San Antonio."

"Ditto to all Marty said! I'm so excited
about using all I learned. Folks, you get an immediate ROI by attending
one of these conferences. Start putting aside some bucks so you can
afford to go next year. It's definitely worth it."

"Barbara Safani is a wizard when it comes
to networking! Wendy Weiss taught me a few new techniques that will make
us more effective this coming year. What can be said of Ric Lanham
except "He nailed it." I never tire of learning from Jack Chapman and
who knew he could play the drums so well?
Freddie Cheek and Ellen Mulqueen know
more about working with those with special needs than I ever imagined. I
find it really interesting how Louise Kursmark just gets smarter and
smarter every year. She too taught me some "new tricks" we will apply
this year.
I really enjoyed seeing all 7 Laura
Decarlos (I KNOW there must be at least 7 of her because she does the
work of at least 7 normal human beings) Laura deserves an award for
making our conference so worthwhile and interesting.
I look forward to seeing you all in
San Antonio next year. It's so nice to know so many nice people!"

I always enjoyed seeing my old friends

an amazing group of people.

"I'm so excited! My supplemental 'Great
Idea Book' from Laura is on my desk. I decided to try just two of the
new ideas the first opportunity I had (Of course, I'll implement more
ideas ASAP, including getting in touch with my accountability partners )
So, while doing my best to catch up on client contact from my absence
and following up on some promises made to several colleagues from the
conference -- and not finished yet --- (if you're on my list), I took a
call from a job seeking prospect. Well, both new ideas from my Great
Idea Book were used with this prospect and sure enough, this new client
will be here on Thursday for a fee based consultation. I also did a
"ball park" quote on her resume, based on the second idea in my Great
Idea Book and I provided my highest price quote ever :-) Because of the
wording of how my fees are structured, thanks to one presenter, the
prospect quickly agreed it was a fair investment.
I'm eager to have more opportunities
to use more suggestions and can't wait to share results after my
appointment on Thursday."

"It is exciting to be in my office today
implementing new ideas, contacting new CDI members, and thanking
everyone for moving us to the next level in not only our businesses, but
in our hearts!
When attending conferences, I always
set three goals. For this conference, the goals were to (1) find writers
for the new launch of a virtual career center www.JobRockit.com (so far
... Ellen Mulqueen., Freddie Cheek., and Cory Edwards), (2) determine
how to set up the website regarding numerous writers (thank you!, Louise
Kursmark!!), and (3) learn new revenue streams (Barbara Safani, Jack
Chapman, Louise Kursmark, Marty Weitzman ... on and on!!)
But, what I take away MOST from this
conference ... the gracious hearts of Jane Roqueplot and Barbara Adams.
Josh Groban has a great song called, 'You Raise Me Up' ... When goals
are set for future conferences, I will make sure that one is set to
"make a difference in someone's life" rather than all goals pointed
toward myself!
As "Make a Difference Day" approaches
Saturday, October 28, I think of Don Skipper's group as they move
forward with the CCTC program ... lest we forget Cordell Tjaden who made
an impression on everyone! Don, we are looking forward to seeing you on
OPRAH! My family was touched by the good hearts of CDI members.
Oprah speaks of many things being 'in
the details.' The Orlando conference was all about "the details." Way to
go, Laura and committees, for creating a fun-filled, rewarding
conference that moves us all to another level business-wise and
heart-wise!!!"

"I ditto everything everyone has said.
For those of you who say it's too expensive or you can't afford it,
coming from Katrinaville I said the same thing. But...you can work it
out. I spent $800.00...which included everything... the conference,
hotel room (I roomed with 3 other ladies - yeah guys it worked out well,
our "networking" continued after our all-day networking), the luau,
meals, some books, plane fare, and transportation to and from the
airport! You can be on a tight budget and still enjoy yourself!
The friendship and sharing was
excellent. The group we had was ready to share anything you wanted or
needed to know. The seminars were excellent! And, of course, Laura had
every detail covered. As we sat munching on M&Ms while waiting for a
session to start, I mentioned to our table the group that if I know
Laura, there is something written on the M&Ms. They laughed....well,
guess who got the prize for knowing what was on the M&Ms!!!!! Chris
(Laura's husband), does she ever sleep??? She made sure every last
detail was perfect. Table toys???? What a great idea!! But the sessions
were packed with so much information, we had to stay during the break to
play with them.
Thank you Laura for such a wonderful
time. It was great to see all of you again. Thank you all for your
friendship and knowledge that you shared. I look forward to seeing all
of you again in San Antonio next year!"

"Colleagues, how can I top the fine words
said by Ellen, Don, Marty, Malloy, Louise, Judy, Ric, and Barbara?
First, one goes to these conferences to learn and network. That happened
in gallons of gold, because Laura, Kate, Chris, and the gang all
provided such a nice venue with all the accouterments of home. I got to
finally meet in person the ladies of the Research Committee, Carrie and
Nona. By the way, Carrie, you have such lovely children! That was a
thrill, because we have been communicating on the telephone almost every
month for about a year.
Also, Grant deserves a special kudo
for dressing in a tux. Naturally, the two stories about Katrina from
Nona and Grant made a deep impression. It is the people who helped them
who deserve special thanks as well. I am glad both these treasured
members are able to get back on their feet again. Having gone through
two earthquakes, I can somewhat empathize with their concerns.
One presentation after another from
Thursday morning on moved so quickly, and one wanted more time on each
one. The Luau was particularly gratifying, because so much camaraderie
was expressed. I will never forget the conversations with Susan Guarneri
at the table topics about blogging and personal branding.
Today in our first-year seminar we
talked about the importance of memory in college and related SAVE
(Selectivity-Association-Visualization-Effort) CRIB
(Concentration-Recitation-Interest-Big and Little Pictures) FOTO
(Feedback-Organization-Time on Task-Ongoing Review). In most examples I
used my well-spent time in Orlando to explain to the students how
important it is to remember people's names and something about them.
Sharon Pierce-Williams and Laura, yes, we even talked about lunch
reviews and their etiquette. You can see I could have networked for
another week. It is hard to get back to the classroom after meeting so
many friends and new friends who have so much to offer.
The time flew by!"

“So much fun, so much great information, and such wonderful
camaraderie!
Yesterday - my first day back - I
immediately sold 2 new service offerings that will bring me $200 pure
profit at no expenditure of time. I proposed about $500 of additional
(new) services to a top executive client, and I'm confident this is just
the start of something wonderful (for them and for me). And I'm
revamping an upcoming workshop to include some of the great tips and
tricks I learned - again, wonderful for my audience and fun for me.
It was great to meet new friends and
reconnect with familiar faces. What a great group! I look forward to

people I'd met at the New Orleans conference plus lots of new people

“After attending Vegas this year, I can
honestly say that I have rarely participated in a conference where the
sessions were so worthwhile (and this was probably my 30th conference).
I have attended the CDI <PRWRA> conference for
the past four years. Not only have I had a wonderful time but, more
importantly, I have greatly benefited from each experience.
What have I gained?
A lucrative relationship with a business
for which I now subcontract.
Information that I have used in materials
I have written for publication.
Invaluable tips on conducting my
business.
Visibility and networking with peers
whose expertise I value.
Ideas for presentations I have given.
The best client management tip I have
ever received and which I have passed along to almost everyone I know.
A chance to meet colleagues whom I admire
and very much wanted to share time with.
Materials, including a resume critique
program, that I use almost daily to make my job easier.
Writing and grammar tips that I have
shared with members of other associations.
And that's just a partial list.
Okay, I must admit I have had fun, too.
The food has always been top notch and the accommodations have been
superior. I have always felt a part of a bigger family of colleagues. I
have even walked away each year with a suitcase full of door prizes and
giveaways.
Congratulations to the whole conference
team. I am already looking forward to Orlando in 2006.”

head is bursting with ideas. Folks, start saving your pennies for

"The Las Vegas meeting was one of the
very best and most informative I have had the pleasure to attend over
the past three years.
I and my staff all learned much at this
meeting. I personally formed two alliances and am working on a third
alliance that I believe will handsomely reward all four of us.
It was also rewarding to learn new
material and to be exposed to new ideas and ways of approaching
problems. In addition to my alliances, I have returned with three
implementable ideas that are being worked on at this writing.
Of course, as always, I had the wonderful
opportunity to rekindle old friendships and to make a few new friends as
well. Isn't that one of the heart, not head, reasons we attend these
things anyway?
To all of those who did not attend, you
REALLY missed some outstanding programs and ideas. See you in Orlando in
October - 2006.”

“Having attended conferences with four
different career associations, I have to say, hands down, CDI <PRWRA> puts on
the best show, from the awards to the food and content. It may not be
the biggest, but I'm all for quality over quantity.
I recently entered
my fifth year in
business and I don't believe I could have made it this far without
conference attendance. I learned a lot, and made some new friends along
the way. I've never experienced a camaraderie in the workplace with
colleagues as I have in this business, yet we compete for the same
clients everyday.”
"How do we begin
to say thank you for such a well-done job of organizing and running such
an important conference! The food was so . . . good; the sessions were
so . . .excellent. Especially, I value the time meeting long-time

conference this year and have to echo the sentiments that so many of you
shared already. I was delighted! I have attended several conferences all
of them being much larger and wasn't sure if the quality would be the
same with a smaller group. What a wonderful surprise! The smaller group
format was excellent because the speakers were really able to
personalize the material and our burning questions were answered with
insight and depth. This was a new experience for me and I found the
information to be extremely valuable and have already started to use it
with my clients.
