Course FAQs

Why this E-Course and how does it tie-in with Career Directors International?

Career Directors International has selected Gayle Howard's e-course: PS...You're a Resume Expert! as the official resume writing course for the association due to the comprehensive nature of the training that extends from information gathering to word basics and formatting, punctuation, special circumstance writing, power wording and more. All with an interactive component where assignments are provided, assessed and expert feedback offered.

The course when completed and passed will provide a fast track to certification, allowing you to jump over several steps of the certification process and straight to the examination.

What won't this e-course do for me?

This course will not make money for you just by elevating your skills alone. You will have the potential to build a referral base of happy clients but the course itself will not open doors for you without your input. That means using your network, being creative about how you market yourself, having a realistic pricing strategy, a good website, and solid advertising. Do not mistake skills with monetary success. Your skills over time should bring people to you and build client loyalty, but of themselves they are not a passport to never-ending riches. Marketing, the employment sector of the time, the type of client you have, and the type of marketing campaigns you drive are all key components.

An exciting and powerfully written resume portfolio is not a substitute for business and sales acumen. You can use your resume portfolio to quickly and impressively illustrate your talents and accomplishments, but, the primary determining factors for your success will still be how well you can communicate your strengths to your potential clients. If you are running a close race with another resume writer for a client's business, the skills, training, and credentials you have can put you a nose ahead, but you still have to run the overall race like a winner.

How can I market myself using my new resume?

Announce your attendance at an advanced resume writing course to your clients in a press release on your website. Note the course in your credentials. Clients will understand that you are investing your time and money in improving your skills.

Apply for certification with Career Directors International to maintain momentum.

Capitalize on your new found skills by noting projects that you are particularly proud of and then submitting them to CDI's TORI Awards. What outstanding marketing mileage you can get from being a nominee or an award winner!

Take advantage of business cards where information about you can be included on the reverse of the card. This mini-billboard can list your courses and your credentials and business cards can be purchased very inexpensively. Always make a point of exchanging your card at networking events, and including them with follow up letters.

Make sure your signature line in your emails sells you whenever you send email, communicate on chat boards or send job search communiqué: Course Graduate, PS...You're a Resume Expert: Resume Mastery for Professional Writers.

Can I change the layout and visuals of the resume I create or change the content?

The e-course gives you the tools to produce creative, consistent, and sophisticated formats and content. When you know what to do and what to change and when, you will be able to do so as you wish. It's the age old Chinese philosophy: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime".

Can I get a refund if I don't like it or change my mind?

If you are unhappy with any aspect of the e-course, Gayle will bend over backwards to make you happy. A service such as this is not like a faulty refrigerator or broken TV. Hours and hours of intensive personal labor make this a non-refundable item and as it is interactive, we continue to expend energies in continuing your training, marketing assignments and providing feedback. Make sure you want it before you purchase.

How does the process work? What happens when and how long does it all take?

As soon as you sign up, we provide you with your user name and password and you can be up and running very quickly. The course is self-paced and can be completed at your leisure, to fit in with your career, time demands and lifestyle. If you're outside Australia, you will have to contain your excitement until business hours roll around in Melbourne.

How does the scoring and pass/fail process work?

While theoretical knowledge is important, in resume writing it is practical application of that information in the form of creating a compelling, dynamic resume document that is the key. The overall assessment reflects the reality of the real world as follows:

Mini quizzes results at the conclusion of each module represent 15% of the final score.

The final resume submission represents 85% of the end result.

There are three pass levels:

Gold Ticket Pass: Gold pass students are eligible to fast-track CARW certification through Career Directors International by moving straight to the resume submission phase.

Silver Ticket Pass: Silver pass students are provided a second opportunity to achieve Gold pass status by re-submitting the final assessment with suggested amendments by the course facilitator.

Bronze Ticket Pass: Bronze pass members have completed the course modules although knowledge and practical application is not yet at certification level. Bronze Pass members will be offered the following:

  • Six months of additional access to the e-course to continue professional development and hone skills.
  • Feedback by the course facilitator in the form of critiques and recommendations on five (5) resumes written for the student's own clients. Facilitator will provide feedback on how these five resumes could have been improved using Career Director's International official score sheet used by the CDI Certification Committee.
  • Invitation to re-submit a final resume assessment within six months based on one of the four e-course scenarios. Five resumes must have been submitted for feedback (above) to the course facilitator for feedback to be eligible for this invitation.

Appeals Process

Transparency is important and you have the right to appeal your assessment. If you believe that your level of pass is inaccurate you will be given the opportunity to have your final resume assessment reviewed by CDI's Certification Committee. The sample will be submitted "blind" and this will be the final avenue for appeal. You will still be given the rights and opportunities available to Bronze Ticket Pass students.
