"Thanks. I just wanted to let you know I make sales because of my participation on <association> committees. I closed one yesterday – the client said – I chose you because you are 'all over the Internet – you serve on so many committees and boards.' It was a very substantial sale."

Is volunteering for you?

If you have experience, passion and a willingness to share, then an opportunity exists for you to get involved. CDI has opportunities whether you can commit a year, a month, or a day. Our committees and mentoring programs represent the diversity of our global membership and your participation is encouraged!

Volunteer Opportunities

Committees & Advisory Boards

Most committees typically meet once per month via phone and are arranged to coordinate around the diverse schedules of our international members. Contributions vary from group to group and we invite you to contact us at info@careerdirectors.com for more information on any committees you may be interested in exploring.

We do accept individuals volunteering at other career associations as long as it is not for an overlapping area. For instance, if you are on an education or certification committee elsewhere you could be on CDI's PR committees but not our education or certification committees.

Current volunteer-driven committees and advisory boards include:

Career Innovator Advisory Committee:

Are you interested in setting trends and staying on top of what is cutting edge in the careers industry? Then help guide CDI's vision and programs by participating in our Career Innovator Advisory Committee.

Join CDI Director, Tony Deblauwe, in 2010 to pioneer exciting new programs. A job-seeker focused project is currently underway.

CDI Go Viral Initiative:

With the help of the Membership & Marketing Committee, a global group of CDI members are working together to enhance the visibility of professional career services and certifications. Our goal is to use viral channels such as social networking and YouTube to attain this awareness. We currently have members from five countries participating!

Membership & Marketing:

NOTE: This group is currently combined with the Go Viral Initiative above. Fondly referred to as CDI's M&Ms, this committee exists to further the visibility of the association both internally and externally. Participation will give you exposure to member networking opportunities while helping CDI to identify and develop exciting new ways to engage our members in the organization and to increase external recognition with potential members and media. Expect to learn more about social networking, marketing, and public relations as we tackle exciting projects and campaigns.

Awards Committee:

Along with CDI's exclusive Toast of the Resume Industry (TORI) competition, World's Best Resume Writer Competition, Master Resume Writer Lifetime Achievement Award, and Master Career Professional Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2009 we launched the Career Innovator Awards under the direction of the Awards Committee. Working with CDI Committee Director, John Donovan, committee members will have the opportunity to design new award programs, act as judges, and guide our recognition programs.

Award committee members may be required to submit resume samples if not currently certified.

Expert Trends Committee:

The current expert trends committee, under the direction of CDI Director, Nona Pratz, pioneers at least one major expert trend research study per year. This committee is the proud parent of the industry's groundbreaking Career Industry Mega Trends reports.

Members participate in cutting-edge industry research tailored to the needs of the industry. If you like learning and want to rapidly become an expert in a niche industry topic, this committee is for you.

Conference Committee:

Even if you were not able to join us at one of our conferences, you've probably heard the hubbub around this most exciting 3-day event. Committee members work with CDI's Board of Directors to identify speakers, create themes, and define an exciting annual meeting! Be the first to know where we will be each year and to direct the topics and fun we create!

Education Committee:

The education committee, under the direction of CDI Director, Laura Drew, will have the exciting opportunity to guide and develop new educational programming for the CDI's membership, which will include teleclasses, webinars, and other courses such as the 15-week Enterpreneurial Wisdom program.

International Relations Committee:

CDI membership currently spans over 14 countries and represents a diverse wealth of international careers experience. Whether you live in the US or one of the other countries that makes up our exciting membership, now you can help make our international offerings more robust than ever before. Join CDI Committee Director, Audrey Field, in developing the future of our international offerings.

Mentors & Expert Advisors

CDI mentors earn CEUs! One hour of documented mentorship equals one CEU.

CDI needs Mentors and Expert Advisors from all walks of life and all areas of expertise. While mentors for practice building and resume writing are in regular demand, we are also seeking to learn about any specialty areas of experience you may have. For instance, you may have a background in Public Relations, Chemical Engineering, Technical Writing, Prison Transition, Career Counseling, Public Speaking, College to Career Transition, Recruiting, Grant Writing, etc.

Becoming an active mentor is also a great way to build the hours necessary to become a Certified Expert Resume Writer.

As a Mentor, when CDI receives a mentor request that meets your experience parameters, you will be contacted. Mentorship requires a six (6) week commitment of one (1) hour per week via phone unless arranged differently with your mentee.

Don't have the time to commit to becoming a Mentor? Then join our database as an Expert Advisor. As an Expert Advisor, you may be contacted on a need basis by CDI members who have a one-time question or need for advise that falls within your area of expertise.

Volunteers for Careers

Following 9/11, CDI (then PRWRA) formulated Volunteers for Careers™, a volunteer-driven program to provide free career services to victims of the catastrophe. An alliance was formed with two other associations, CMI and NRWA, and several thousand volunteers were served. Following Hurricane Katrina, Volunteers for Careers™ was again put into action but this time with the support of eight associations. You can volunteer your time to the victims of this tragedy by going to www.volunteersforcareers.com for more information.
